The role of RANK/RANKL signaling for skin homeostasis and barrier function during anti-microbial immune responses
In cutaneous Herpes simplex virus infection we have shown that the RANK/RANKL pathway is critically involved in barrier protection and the expansion of virus-specific CD8+ effector T cells. Now we will analyse the role of RANKL signalling on innate anti-microbial immunity, memory responses and long-lasting barrier preservation during skin infections. Moreover, we will assess whether RANK/RANKL interactions represent a general mechanism, which protects from infections and controls barrier integrity in other epithelial tissues than the skin.
