Spring School 2025 at the Faculty of Medicine, University Hong Kong

As an expert in the development of AI solutions to address biomedical questions, Prof. Dominik Heider was invited as a guest lecturer at the renowned University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine as part of the Spring School. Organized by the University's Institute of Microbiology, a bioinformatics course on microbial genomics and applied artificial intelligence took place during the week of March 17–21, 2025. The goal of the course was to gain practical experience with advanced bioinformatics tools in microbial research. Heider first introduced the participants, mostly PhD researchers from healthcare and laboratory settings, to various machine learning models. Through real-life case studies in clinical microbiology, such as the prediction of antimicrobial resistance, the participants were able to apply and deepen their acquired knowledge. At the end of the course, they were able to develop simple workflows and machine learning models themselves using the open source toolkit Orange.
