Medical University of Warsaw

1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The best use of modern equipment and knowledge of excellent specialists is the motto of the Ist Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Medical University of Warsaw. Every day, the national and local consultants take care of patients’ health e.g. National Consultant in the field of Perinatology, professor Mirosław Wielgoś, as the Local Consultants in the field of Gynecological Enodcrinology, Ass. Prof. Barbara Grzechocińska and Professor Bronisława Pietrzak (Obstetrics and Gynecology).

This unit was the first academic gynaecological and obstetrical department - it has been continuously on the medical map of Warsaw since January 14, 1921. Involvement of our staff can be proven by receiving 11 Ph.D.’s, 5 Asst. Prof.’s and 2 full Professor’s titles in last five years. We offer care for patients with serious complications during the course of pregnancy at the Pregnancy Pathology Department – the tertiary reference center. We deal with modern methods of intrauterine therapy for serological conflict, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and.

Most recently our department was key leader in investigations concerning the immunomodulatory role of mesenchymal stem cells from perinatal tissues and endometrial receptivity regarding activity of metalloproteinases and serum expression of the vascular growth factors in hyperglycemia in pregnancy. This part of the research activity of the clinic was coordinated by dr Filip Dabrowski and projects involved implementation of state-of the art biotechnology including stem cell harvesting and culturing, assessing immunocompetency of cell cultures with luminex multiplex assays driven by xMAP technology (which enables simultaneous detection and quantitation of multiple secreted proteins (e.g., cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors) or expressed genes) immunostaining and more. Prof Piotr Laudański is coordinator of multicentered study on the search of potential biomarkers of endometriosis that includes 8 clinical centers in Poland. Grant is currently still ongoing and the analysis of protein microarray results of plasma and peritoneal fluid should be published in 2020. Within the grant we collaborate with Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of Polish Academy of Science on the application.
