Topic: Causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases
Stefan is an early proponent of using natural experiments and econometric methods to assess policies in dentistry, and effects of dental traits on systemic diseases. In his work, he used family size, school reforms, drinking water fluoridation and exposure to the 2011 Japan Earthquake as instrumental variables.
