Das Centrum für Reproduktionsmedizin und Andrologie der Universität Münster ist zutiefst betroffen von der traurigen Nachricht, dass Professor Eberhard Nieschlag am Freitag, dem 28. Februar 2025, verstarb.

Ebo kam am 16. Juli 1941 in Bad Godesberg zur Welt. Er studierte Medizin an der Universität Bonn. Im Jahr 1967 erwarb er den Doktorgrad in Medizin an der Universität Bonn. Als junger Forscher erhielt er weiteres Training in der Abteilung für Biochemie der Universität Köln, am University College London und an der Clinical Embryology Unit des Medical Research Council in Edinburgh, UK, bevor er in die Abteilung für Klinische Endokrinologie an der Universität Mainz kam. Von 1971-1972 ging er in die USA und arbeitete am NIH Reproductive Research Brand in Bethesda, MD. Von dort zurück, ging er für vier Jahre bis 1976 an die Medizinische Klinik der Universität Düsseldorf. Hier wurde er Facharzt für Innere Medizin und habilitierte 1976 mit der Venia legendi für Innere Medizin. Später in seiner Karriere qualifizierte er sich weiter und wurde zusätzlich Facharzt für Endokrinologie (1977) und einer der ersten in Deutschland offiziell anerkannten zertifizierten Andrologen (2005).

In Münster arbeitete er ab 1976 kontinuierlich im Gebiet der männlichen Endokrinologie und Reproduktion, zunächst bis 1986 als Leiter der Abteilung für Experimentelle Endokrinologie an der Universitäts-Frauenklinik. Ebos Vision, Grundlagen- und klinische Forschung zu verknüpfen und damit translationale Forschung vom Labor ins Krankenzimmer zu bringen, ermöglichte ihm von 1980-1988 als Direktor der neu gegründeten Max-Planck Klinischen Forschergruppe  Reproduktionsmedizin zu wirken. Dieses Team wuchs rasch, so dass es unter seiner Führung zum Institut für Reproduktionsmedizin (IRM) an der Universität Münster aufstieg, dessen Direktor Ebo bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2007 blieb. Das IRM erhielt 1987 den Status eines WHO-Kollaborationszentrums für Forschung in männlicher Reproduktion. Ebo nutzte die Chance, das Feld der Andrologie weltweit zu prägen und zu gestalten. Er harmonisierte Diagnosewege, propagierte evidenzbasierte Medizin und entwickelte Strategien für die hormonelle männliche Kontrazeption. Als erster Androloge ergänzte er die andrologische Klinik mit einem IVF-Zentrum, um infertilen Männern durch das ICSI-Verfahren eine Vaterschaft zu ermöglichen. Das IRM war sein Zentrum für exzellente und global einzigartige lebenslange Leistungen in Forschung und Behandlung. Ebos Enthusiasmus und unbändiger Arbeitseifer beeinflussten viele Facetten der Andrologie. Er war (Mit-)Gründer vieler internationaler Gesellschaften und wurde zum Präsidenten aller für die Andrologie relevanten Gesellschaften gewählt.

Gemeinsam mit der Europäischen Akademie für Andrologie baute er ein Fortbildungs- und Trainingsprogramm für Forscher*innen und Kliniker*innen in der Andrologie auf. Unter seiner Ägide als Präsident transformierte er die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Andrologie in eine moderne Fachgesellschaft, die eine strukturierte Spezialisierung deutscher Andrologen ermöglicht. Die Qualitätskontrolle der Ejakulatanalyse wurde durch die von ihm initiierte Gründung der QuaDeGA zunächst entwickelt und professionalisiert und machte die Gesellschaft damit zum weltweiten Vorbild. Ebo übernahm im Ruhestand die Lenkung dies Qualitätskontrollprogramms von 2009-2024.

Ebo war ein Gigant der Andrologie und Reproduktionsmedizin. Seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten führten zu Durchbrüchen im Verständnis der männlichen Fertilität, Hormonwirkung und reproduktiven Funktionen. Er war ein extrem visionärer Mensch mit höchster Motivation und einem starken Willen.

Deshalb erhielt er viele Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen. Er war in vielen Funktionen in Gesellschaften national und international aktiv. So war er u.a. Präsident der International Society of Andrology (1981-1985), der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie (1990-1993), der European Academy of Andrology (1992-1998), der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Andrologie (2002-2007) und der European Society of Endocrinology (2007-2011). Er erhielt die European Medal of the British Society for Endocrinology (1993), den Keith Harrison Award of the Endocrine Society of Australia (1993) und wurde 1994 zum Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians, London, ernannt. Eine besondere Auszeichnung war der Jung-Preis für Medizin (1996). Die Universität Lodz (Polen) verlieh ihm 2006 den Ehrendoktortitel. Er war Distinguished Andrologist der American Society of Andrology im Jahr 2007. Ehrenmitgliedschaften verliehen ihm die Deutschen Gesellschaften für Urologie (2007), Andrologie (2008), Reproduktionsmedizin (2017) und Endokrinologie (2011), die ihn auch mit der Berthold-Medaille (2012) auszeichnete. International sprachen die European Academy of Andrology (2019), die European Society of Endocrinology (2015) und die European Academy of Andrology (2019) ihm die Ehrenmitgliedschaft zu. Im Jahr 2021 wurde er von der American Society of Andrology zum „Grandmaster of Testosterone“ ernannt.

Im Jahr 2008 wurde Ebo das Bundesverdienstkreuz ersten Grades verliehen.

Ebo publizierte mehr als 850 wissenschaftliche Artikel und mehr als 300 Buchkapitel. Er war Editor von 14 Büchern. Das vielleicht wichtigste Werk ist das Handbuch „Andrologie: Grundlagen und Klinik der reproduktiven Gesundheit des Mannes“. Dieses erschien in deutscher und englischer Sprache in vier Editionen und gilt als eine der wichtigsten Referenzen im Feld der Andrologie.

Als Forscher und IRM-Direktor wirkte Ebo mit großer Autorität und Kompetenz als Führungspersönlichkeit. Jeder bewunderte ihn für sein Wissen und seine Weisheit. Er war ein vorangehender Arbeiter und erwartete gleiches von seinen Mitarbeiter*innen und Kooperationspartner*innen. Er war empathisch und einfühlsam mit Menschen in Not. Bei privaten und professionellen Veranstaltungen glänzte er als wundervoller Gastgeber unabhängig davon, ob es um Workshops, Symposien, Exkursionen oder Weihnachtsfeiern ging.

Das Centrum für Reproduktionsmedizin und Andrologie als Nachfolgeinstitution des IRM verneigt sich vor der Lebensleistung von Ebo und fühlt sich verpflichtet, das Feld der Reproduktionsmedizin mit all seinen Facetten in Forschung und Krankenversorgung in seinem Sinne fortzuführen. Wir behalten ihn in ehrenvoller Erinnerung. 

Ein starker Mann braucht eine starke Familie. Wir trauern gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Susan und den Töchtern Alexa und Lisa. Sie waren immer an seiner Seite und haben ihn unermüdlich unterstützt. Susan hat als Editorin zahlloser Artikel und Bücher hohen Anteil an der großartigen publikatorischen Lebensleistung von Ebo.

The Centre of Reproductive Medicine and Andrology of the University of Münster is deeply saddened to announce that Professor Eberhard Nieschlag passed away on Friday, 28 February 2025.

Ebo was born in Bad Godesberg, Germany, on 16 July 1941. He studied Medicine at the University of Bonn and obtained his MD degree in 1967. He received his postdoctoral training at the Dept. of Biochemistry, University College London, and the MRC Clinical Embryology Unit, Edinburgh, UK, before he joined the Department of Clinical Endocrinology at the University of Mainz, Germany. From 1971-1972 he was trained at the NIH Reproductive Research Brand in Bethesda, MD, USA. He then worked for four years at the Medical Clinic of the University Düsseldorf until 1976. Here he was awarded with the specialization and the Venia legendi for the VORSCHLAG: discipline of Internal Medicine in 1976. Later, he additionally became specialist for the discipline of Endocrinology (1977) and was one of the first officially certified Andrologists in Germany (2005).

In Münster, Germany, he continuously worked in the field of male endocrinology and reproduction, first acting as the Head of the Department of Experimental Endocrinology at the Woman´s Hospital of the University Clinic Münster from 1976-1986. Ebo´s vision to bring together basic and clinical science and to perform translational research from bench to bedside led him into the directorship of the newly founded Max-Planck Clinical Research Group in Reproductive Medicine from 1980-1988. This group grew under his directorship and became the Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) at the University of Münster. Ebo acted as Director until his retirement in 2007 with strong focus on male reproduction. The Institute became a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research in Male Reproduction in 1987, and Ebo took the great chance to influence the field of andrology worldwide - with efforts in harmonizing the diagnostic pathways in male reproduction, fostering the concept of evidence-based medicine and the leadership in male hormonal contraception. He was the first Andrologist to set up a Fertility Centre when ICSI came up to offer the chance for treatment in severely infertile men. This Institute of Reproductive Medicine was his driving force for an outstanding and unique lifelong performance in research and clinical work. His enthusiasm and drive has formed many facets of the field of Andrology. He was founder of many international societies and president of all relevant societies not only in Germany, but worldwide. With the European Academy of Andrology he set up a scientific and training structure for basic researchers and clincial andrologists in the field. As President of the Germany Society of Andrology (DGA) he developed the DGA to a modern society, with strong input on the structured specialisation in the field of Andrology in Germany. By developing the Quality Control Program of the DGA, he manifested the society´s leadership in the quality control of semen analysis worldwide. After retirement Ebo acted as CEO of the Quality Control Scheme QuaDeGA from 2009 until 2024.

Eberhard Nieschlag was truly a giant in Reproductive Medicine and Andrology. His work has led to breakthroughs in our understanding of male fertility, hormone action and male reproductive functions. He was an extremely visionary character with enormous motivation and a strong will.

For this, Ebo was awarded many prizes and honors. He served in many scientific boards and organizations on a national and international level. He was President of the International Society of Andrology (1981-1985), the German Society of Endocrinology (1990-1993), the European Academy of Andrology (1992-1998), German Society of Andrology (2002-2007) and European Society of Endocrinology (2007-2011). He was awarded the European Medal of the British Society for Endocrinology (1993), received the Keith Harrison award of the Endocrine Society of Australia (1993) and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians, London, in 1994. An outstanding German honour was the Jung Prize for Medicine in 1996. In 2006, he became Doctor honoris causa at the Univerity Lodz (Poland). He was the distinguished Andrologist of the American Society of Andrology in 2007 and became honorary member of the German Societies of Urology (2007), Andrology (2008), Endocrinology (2011, Berthold Medail in 2012) and Reproductive Medicine (2017). Internationally he was offered honorary membership by the European Academy of Andrology (2019), the European Society of Endocrinology (2015) and the European Academy of Andrology (2019). In 2021, he was honoured by the US Andrology Society as „Grandmaster of Testosterone“. In 2008, he received the 1st Grade German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz).

Ebo published more than 850 scientific articles, more than 300 book chapters and edited 14 books. Perhaps the most significant book is the textbook „Andrology: Male Reproductive Health and Dysfunction“, which during four editions became one of the most influential reference books in Andrology.

As researcher and IRM director, Ebo has been a great authority and a true leader. He was respected for his knowledge and wisdom. He was an extremely hard worker and requested equal performance from his staff and collaborators. He was empathic and insightful with people facing challenges. He was a wonderful host for private and professional events, being it symposia, workshops, summer excursions or Christmas parties.

A strong man needs support from a strong family. We mourn together with his wife Susan and his daughters Alexa and Lisa. They were always at his side and supported him devotionally. Susan earns credit as Editor for countless articles in journals and books. She has significant share on Ebo´s tremendous lifetime output of scientific articles.

With the Centre of Reproductive Medicine and Andrology as the successor institution, we bow in humility and take the chance to further develop the field of reproductive health in all its facetes in research and patient care, and with this we will keep Eberhard Nieschlag in honoring memory. A memorial ceremony will be organized by the CeRA in collaboration with the University and his family on Saturday, May 17, 2025 in Münster.
