SALUS project

Glaucoma is one of the most common chronic eye diseases. It affects nearly one million people in Germany and, if left untreated or inadequately treated, can lead to blindness. Glaucoma is not an age-related disease, although the rate of new cases increases with age.

Treatment of glaucoma is usually based on lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). The SALUS project therefore aims to investigate whether glaucoma care can be optimized across the board if patients regularly measure their IOP at home using so-called self-tonometers. The self-measured values are incorporated into ambulatory daily pressure profiles, which can be viewed via an app by treating ophthalmologists in practices and clinics as well as by the patients themselves. In case of critical values, the treating eye care professional can adjust the treatment directly.
